Background: There is an international emphasis on providing timely and high quality data to monitor progress of countries toward Millennium Development Goals. Iran’s Multiple INDICATOR Demographic and HEALTH Survey (IrMIDHS) aimed to provide valid information on population and HEALTH outcomes to monitor progress in achieving national priorities and HEALTH programs and to assist policy makers to design effective strategies for improving HEALTH outcomes and equity in access to care.Methods: A cross-sectional multi-stage stratified cluster-random survey is conducted through face-to-face household interviews. The sampling frame is developed using Iran’s 2006 population and housing census. Provincial samples ranging are from a minimum of 400 households per province to 6400 households in Tehran province. Cluster size is 10 households. The target sample includes 3096 clusters: 2187 clusters in urban and 909 clusters in rural areas. IrMIDHS instruments include three questionnaires: Household questionnaire, women aged 15-54 questionnaire, children under five questionnaire, supervision and quality assessment checklists and data collection sheets and standard weight and height measurement tools for under-five children. A cascading decentralized training method is used for training data collection and supervision teams. Quality assurance procedures are defined for the five steps of conducting the survey including: Sampling, training data collection and training teams, survey implementation, data entry and analysis. A multi-layer supervision and monitoring procedure is established. All the questionnaires are double entered.Conclusions: IrMIDHS will provide valuable data for policymakers in Iran. Designing and implementation of the study involve contributions from academics as well as program managers and policy makers. The collaborative nature of the study may facilitate better usage of its results.

Poverty and inequality are one of the major concepts in the world (Alvaredo and Gasparini, 2013: 3). So far, one of the important issues is the imbalance of the distribution system and the failure of the urban services system, and the heterogeneous and unplanned development is one of the main reasons for this problem (Yazdani and Firouzi Majande, 2016: 18). One of these services is in cities and HEALTHcare services, and over the past two decades a large amount of research and reporting on socio-economic inequalities in HEALTH have been conducted. There is an inequality in access to HEALTH services in both developed and developing countries (Braveman and Tarimo, 2002: 1621). The growing challenges are whether HEALTH is negatively affected by inequality of income within the community (Nilsson and Bergh, 2012: 2).

Introduction: Given the importance of monitoring the status of maternal HEALTH provision in the country, this study aimed to evaluate the utilization of maternal HEALTH services by province using data from Multiple INDICATORs Demographic and HEALTH Survey in I.R Iran.Methods: This study used data Multiple INDICATORs Demographic and HEALTH Survey conducted in 2010 in I.R. Iran. INDICATORs of maternal HEALTH services including place of delivery, type of delivery (vaginal or Cesarean section), postnatal care (at least one visit), antenatal care coverage, and births attended by skilled HEALTH personnel were calculated using data on 3974 women aged 15-54 with a live birth in the two years preceding the survey. Findings of the study were compared with the results reported from Demographic and HEALTH Survey conducted in 2000.Results: All INDICATORs of maternal HEALTH services except Cesarean section have been improved in the past 10 years. The Cesarean section rate has been increased from 35% to 46% with a rising trend, becoming a countrywide phenomenon. The highest rates of delivery in en route belonged to Tehran province (5.33%).Highest rates of delivery in home were observed in Sistan and Baluchestan, and Kohgilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad provinces. The lowest rate of postnatal care belonged to Ilam (45.7%) and Kerman (55.9%) provinces.Conclusion: Regarding improvements in the surveyed INDICATORs in women aged 15-54, inequalities in provinces of the country have clearly been decreased during the past decade. Appropriate intervention programs should be developed to address local needs and reduce Cesarean section rate effectively.
